Home Security Do's and Dont's
Most home
security experts will agree that avoiding a burglary doesnt always require the most
expensive, high tech security systems around. All it takes to keep yourself safe is
following a basic common sense set of rules and buying some basic security measures for your
home. The following list of home security dos and donts refers to these common
sense rules and basic security measures.
Home security Dos
Do make sure
that your house doesnt stand out as a potential target from that of your neighbors.
Do make sure
your house and yard are properly lit, as burglars fear light as much as they fear noisy
alarms.
Do make sure
that you lock other connected structures to your house, such as the garage, the storage shed
and so forth.
Do ask your
neighbors or friends if they can watch over your house while youre away on vacation.
Do pay someone
to mow your lawn and pick up newspapers and deliveries while youre away for a longer
period, so that the house wont look vacant.
Do use a remote
home security lighting system to turn your indoor and outdoor lights on and off while
youre on vacation, in order to create an occupied house look.
Do get a guard
dog if you can commit on taking care of him and training him.
Do train your
guard dog to be wary of strangers.
Do close all
your windows when youre going away for even a couple of hours.
Do make sure
that if you take any home security measures, burglars SEE them and they see that youre
concerned about your homes safety.
Do get a safety
chain for your door. This will stop a potential burglar that knocks on your door from
assaulting you and checking out the stuff you have in your house.
Home security Donts
Dont ever
hide your key under the mat or above the door. These are the first places a burglar will
search when hes attempting to break in.
Dont leave
connecting structures such as garages or storage sheds unlocked. They can offer safer ways
for burglars to get in your house or provide the tools needed to break in or reach certain
areas that would otherwise be inaccessible.
Dont leave
a pair of keys to your house in the car, even if its locked.
Dont leave
tools or ladders laying around your yard, since they can provide a means to getting inside
your home for burglars.
Dont ever
leave a security issue unattended. If your lock breaks down today, you should fix it today
then.
Dont offer
burglars hiding cover. Try to trim all your yard shrubs and trees so that a person hiding
behind them is visible.
Dont open
your door before looking through the peephole. You risk getting assaulted, but even if the
burglar is not violent and simply comes up with a silly reason for visiting you such as
inquiring for something or asking to borrow something trivial, it might just be a technique
to see if you have something of value inside your house thats worth stealing.
