Good Home Security Habits

All too many burglaries occur simply because the burglars profit from the home owners’ lack of attention to security details and their inability to stick with a couple of common sense home security habits. If you manage to form these habits and stick with them, a home security system won’t be something you’ll rely on, but something that’s complementary to your own protective measures.

I set up a punctual list of good home security habits that are bound to be useful to undertake at some point, It’s obviously hard to follow each and every one of them, but try as many as possible and try forming them into habits rather than taking them as extra chores you need to go through for your home’s security.

  • Form the habit of using your peephole before opening up to anyone. In addition you could use a door chain to keep potential aggressors or “checkout burglars” (burglars that knock on your door with trivial reasons and check your home for valuable stuff)
  • Form the habit of closing and checking all your doors and windows when you leave home. Even upper story windows can pose a potential home security threat as clever and agile burglars will find a way to get to them.
  • Form the habit of setting up and checking your home security system and alarms before going to bed. A lot of houses get burgled, despite having home security systems installed, simply because their owners forgot to turn them on.
  • Form the habit of getting constant software updates and maintenance for your home security system. This can improve its performance and you will avoid any problems caused by component breakdowns.
  • Form the habit of trimming your yard bushes, shrubs and trees if you have any. They can act as potential cover for burglars that try to get in your house and trees that are close to the house can even be used as ladders to get to upper story windows or roof access points, therefore they are a serious home security risk.
  • Form the habit of locking up your tools in the storage shed if you worked with them during the day, instead of simply laying them around the yard. Ladders left lying around the yard can be used by burglars to gain access to upper story windows and roof access points and tools left there can be used to smash or force windows and doors open.
  • Form the habit of being on a constant watch out for suspicious persons around your house. A person that checks out your house one day might just be waiting for someone, but a person that constantly does this might be a burglar checking out your work hours and your house security measures and he might be planning an attack on your home.

If you can get these habits up and running, security shouldn’t be a problem anymore, especially if you combine them with a quality home security system. Not only will these habits make a burglar less likely to mark your home as a target but they will also inform him that you’re putting an effort in your own home’s security, which will also make him move on to find a different target.
