Home Security Through All 4 Seasons
Although buying
a home security system is designed to protect you all year round, its not a bad idea
to take extra precautions depending on the season. You might not think it, but home security
is somehow related to seasonal change, as some times of the year are more prone to
burglaries and some seasons affect home security measures to the point where they can make
your home more vulnerable to attacks. So lets take a look at the home security
specific of each season and point out what you will have to pay extra attention to and what
will be your homes vulnerabilities.
Home security during springtime
Springtime is
considered having moderate impact on home security and its not necessarily a season
that statistics point out to be prone to burglaries. Being a transition season however,
temperatures might shift from extreme cold to extreme warmth, which can affect the state and
performance of your home security system, especially those components that are designed to
protect your homes exterior. Since its a rather wet season, make sure that all
your external motion detectors, security cameras or alarms are all waterproof and the water
doesnt affect their performance one bit.
Home security during summertime
Home security
experts consider summertime the period of the year when burglaries have the highest chance
of happening. This has been proven statistically, as more than half of all house burglaries
occur during this period and this has a couple of explanations.
First of all,
summertime is vacation season for most of us and many people choose to detach from their
daily surroundings during summertime, leaving town. This gives burglars a good opportunity
to plan their attack thoroughly. They lose two of the threats they fear most: sound, light
and time. Light and time are not an issue anymore if someone is away from home, so the only
thing they will have to bypass is the barking guard dog or the burglar alarm that you
installed.
In addition,
being hot all-round, you will constantly feel the need to open windows to create a chilly
airflow, especially when theres no air conditioning system installed. This gives
thieves and burglars the opportunity to steal items from your house even when youre
inside, but in a different room for example. Another common mistake related to this is
leaving upper story windows open to freshen up the house while youre away for a few
hours or so. A clever burglar will be able to find a way to climb up to the open window and
get in your house without too much effort.
Home security during autumn
Autumn is
considered a low risk season, as the outside weather will keep people inside their homes
longer than they would during spring or summer for example. Its also a lot harder for
burglars to work in a rainy and muddy environment as it would prove too messy
and sloppy and they could easily be identified. On the other hand, the same murky weather
could cause problems to your outdoor home security system components so make sure
theyre 100% waterproof.
Home security during winter
Statistically,
winter is the second most burglary-prone season after summer; however its still
considered a medium-threat season. Youll be spending a lot more time inside your
house, giving burglars less time to move around and act. During the holidays, things are a
lot different though. People leave on vacations and leave their houses unattended and the
entire holidays can distract us from issues such as home security, making us more
vulnerable.
